In the midst of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) Regional Fish Ports (RFP) defied the odds and delivered a whopping 37,900.16 metric tons (MT) of fish to all clients and stakeholders in January 2023. Despite the combined effects of a low-pressure area (LPA) and the northeast monsoon (Amihan), the agency managed to provide an adequate volume of fish to consumers nationwide.
According to reports, the inclement weather significantly affected the operations of all PFDA ports throughout the country. Nonetheless, the PFDA - Navotas Fish Port Complex (PFDA-NFPC) started the year on a positive note with a 17.37% increase in fish unloading, delivering a total of 18,184.59 MT of fish in January compared to the previous month.
The PFDA - Lucena Fish Port Complex (PFDA-LFPC) also made strides by transporting 1,687.91 MT of fish, which marked an 11.75% increase in fish unloading. Meanwhile, the PFDA - Davao Fish Port Complex (PFDA-DFPC) tripled its monthly unloading record in January as fish transshipment operations returned to the port. Records revealed that the Davao port posted a remarkable 262.58% increase, ending the month at 1,687.91 MT.
However, the PFDA - General Santos Fish Port Complex (PFDA-GSFPC) experienced a decline in fish unloading due to the inclement weather conditions. Nevertheless, the GenSan port still managed to deliver 14,897.04 MT of fish.
Similarly, port operations in the PFDA - Bulan Fish Port Complex (PFDA-DFPC) and the PFDA - Zamboanga Fish Port Complex (PFDA-ZFPC) were also affected by the January rain. Nonetheless, the ports delivered 31.29 MT and 558.705 MT of fish to consumers, respectively.
Lastly, the PFDA - Iloilo Fish Port Complex (PFDA-IFPC) distributed 1,255.59 MT of fish despite moderate to heavy rains in the region.
Despite the weather challenges, the PFDA RFPs demonstrated resilience and dedication to providing adequate fish supply to consumers across the country. The PFDA’s successful delivery of a high volume of fish amidst difficult weather conditions highlights their commitment to the Philippine fishing industry and the consumers who depend on it.
